A well-mannered dog is pure joy to be around, but a bad-mannered dog can be an embarrassment and an annoyance. Well-mannered dogs are popular with everyone, but a dog with poor manners may be shunned and possibly even hated.

There is of course disagreement on how dogs should be allowed to behave in some circumstances, and to some extent it is a personal preference, but there are some minimum requirements, especially when it comes to manners around food, children, strangers, and other dogs. They all add up to the same thing: respect. A well-mannered dog respects his people and acknowledges them as his pack leaders.

FOOD MANNERS

There are few things worse than sitting at a table eating, and having a dog sitting nearby begging or drooling, or sniffing around under the table waiting for crumbs to drop.

To develop good food manners, dogs need to be taught from the beginning that the table (more…)

Dogs, dogs everywhere. Some homes have more than one dog, others have a pack of them. Whether a home has one dog or more, it’s imperative they’ve been either spayed or neutered. In a home where multiple dogs live, it’s important to always assert yourself as the leader because, in every pack there can be only one leader.

Your position as the leader of your pack, doesn’t mean yelling or harming your dogs. In the wild, the dog trying to assert dominance over the leader will quietly but firmly, be put in its place without physical harm.

When it comes to feeding your dogs, remember as pack leader, you eat first. Of course, you may save a couple of bites of food when you are finished, just as a mother dog would. While you’re feeding your dogs, do not allow the ones who finish first to rush to the bowls of (more…)

  • This is dependant upon many factors. One question is, ‘Who’s fault was the dog attack?’ Another is ‘How severe was the dog attack?’ If the dog gave a person a warning nip, then no, it is not necessary to destroy the dog. What is necessary is further training and socialisation for the dog to teach it that this is not acceptable behaviour. If the dog was provoked, for example someone was hitting it repeatedly, then again, the dog should not be destroyed and the person hitting the dog should be held entirely responsible. However, some dogs have been trained to attack anything that moves. It is my personal opinion that these people should be the ones put down, though I doubt very much the House of Commons will pass this law. Unfortunately these dogs may still have to be put down, as, even though the fault lies entirely with the (more…)

    Wolf Dog

Dogs that attack humans should be put down, based on the nature of the event. Say a dog were to bite a person, barely breaking the skin. This dog was merely playing around. It meant no actual harm to the person, so it should simply be sent to a professional trainer, and taught to express its playfulness in other ways. Now, if a large dog were to attack a person and cause significant damage, this dog is a problem. Its intention was purely harmful. This dog needs to be put down. The owner of this dog (if said dog has an owner) also needs to be interrogated. This person is a poor owner and needs to be fined. If you cannot teach your dog obedience, then you do not deserve the dog. Odds are, this owner is either negligent, or someone that trains dogs to be violent. Any dog can (more…)

    Best breeds for guard dogs

    A Little Dog

Please read the warnings in this article if you an ordinary family looking for a guard dog or thinking of buying a particular breed to be a guard dog to guard your family. They could save your life or those of your children. (If you are looking for a guard dog for a security firm, you are unlikely to be reading this article for advice!) You also should be aware of the difference between a watchdog and a guard dog.

If you train your family pet dog to be a guard dog or if you buy a breed known to be aggressive you could end up with unintended consequences. The same thing applies if you train your dog to be vicious – it could easily turn on you or your children. See for example http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/eng land/merseyside/6226565.stm, the story of a five year old girl mauled to death by a family pet. (more…)

  • Behavior: Stop the dog from biting

    Posing Dog

Dogs are known as man’s best friend. In some cases people think differently such as when a dog bites a human. Dogs bite for many reasons. Some of the reasons are due to fear, protection, or play biting. Play biting should not be tolerated by the owner of the dog. When playing with a dog, if the dog gets aggressive and bites too hard, the dog needs to be punised. In the act of the dog biting you too hard while playing the dog needs to be told it is bad and wrong. Let your dog know not to do this and that it will not be tolerated. Do not hit your dog or show that you are about to hit the dog. What you should do is stop playing with your dog, tell the dog no and either put the dog in another are or walk away after telling (more…)
